The Japanese cohosh is one of the most heat tolerant species of the genus. The basal rosette (resembling a long stem astilbe) makes a nice fine textural interest in the shade garden unitl late summer, when, it sends forth 18" see thru branched spikes of dainty white flowers...great to fiddle with ferns or hover near hostas.
