What's an Alabama fern doing in Texas? This US dryland native has a wide range, and we gathered spores of this specimen from a rock cliff in Kendall Co., TX, just north of the town of Boerne. C. alabamensis makes a delightful rock garden-sized clump of cutleaf, dark green deer-resistant foliage to 8" tall x 6" wide. As with most plants that occur in rock cliffs, good drainage is important. In the wild, the roots find their way beneath large rock where slight amounts of moisture are retained. While C. alabamensis is very drought tolerant, but some watering is important until it gets well-established.
