(syn: Symphyotrichum walteri) We first discovered this bizarre native southeastern US aster in southern Georgia on a dry granite outcrop. Looking less like an aster and more like a green pipe cleaner, the wiry but rigid stems are clothed with tiny leaves (not leaves in the traditional sense). In late fall (October in NC), the clumps are topped with unique 1" blue lavender daisies. A. walteri is great to stump the plant nerds who like to visit and think they know everything.
