This is a stunning and remarkably different selection of fall-blooming aster. Some taxonomists say it's A. novi-belgii, while others say A. laevis. Frankly, we now think this may be an interspecific hybrid... we're just going to have to send condoms along with each plant to prevent this mess! A. 'Calliope' makes a 6' tall mound of foliage with fabulous glossy black stems. The clump, narrow at the bottom and branched toward the top, is topped in early fall with 1" medium blue flowers with yellow centers. The stem color provides lots of possibilities for the garden designer to make great color echoes.
