(coll. #A1K-143) Asplenium scolopendrium 'Ulleung Island' is a 2005 spore-produced, Plant Delights/JLBG introduction. So, who is this Hart person, and what was the fascination with his tongue? Inquiring minds want to know. Actually "hart" is an old-fashioned term for an adult male deer...who knew? Native from the US through Europe and Asia, this offering represents the Asian form. I killed dozens of these until I tried this 1997 accession from Uulong Island, Korea. The 8" long, plastic-feeling, strap-like leaves make a bold-textured, attention-getting rosette to 1' wide. Hart's-tongue fern is amazingly winter-hardy, given the right soil conditions, which include the infamous moist but well-drained soil and a pH that approaches neutral.
