We originally acquired this gem from Europe as Arum concinnatum with black spots. Instead it turned out to be a superb, easy-to-grow hybrid of Arum italicum and Arum dioscoridis, which we christened Arum 'Jet Black Wonder'. This unique selection is highly prized for its jet black stems that provide a superb contrast to the fall-emerging, arrow-shaped, green leaves. As the leaves of Arum 'Jet Black Wonder' mature, they develop a subtle silver veining along with random small black dots...like your carpet after hiring a low-cost painter. From within the foliage in early spring (April for us), the heavily spotted blush purple spathe and spadix flower emerge atop jet black stems. Shortly after flowering, the leaves go dormant for the summer. If your plant took time to have a sexual rendezvous, you'll also get a short stalk of bright red berries after the leaves disappear, but if you don't want babies, give it a snip before the little ones hit the ground. Arum 'Jet Black Wonder' needs a bit of sun to be a true garden standout, so keep this one out of the dense shade.
