Carex radiata, aka Eastern star sedge, hails from much of the eastern part of North America from Canada south through Alabama, yet few gardeners have ever grown it. We first encountered Carex radiata on a plant hike in Halifax County, NC, where its texture was stunning along a native woodland trail. Our 2015 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction are clonal plants from our collection. Carex radiata 'Halifax' forms a finely-textured 8" tall semi-evergreen mound that blends well with hostas, hellebores, and bold-textured woodland plants. After flowering in spring, the foliage settles to the ground forming a 30" wide ring as the new growth emerges from the center.
