(aka: Fagopyrum 'Variegata') Fagopyrum dibotrys 'Flambeau' is the ultimate edimental (an edible ornamental)...a perennial buckwheat that hails from 5,000' to 10,000' elevation in the Himalayas. We've grown Flambeau buckwheat (no relation to the Our Gang character) for 20 years and have no excuse for not offering it before now. Buckwheat forms a large deciduous mass of fleshy stalks to 3' tall x 6' wide, adorned with sweet potato-like foliage. Each leaf is randomly sectorally blotched with creamy variegation. Starting in late summer, the tips of each stalk are topped with attractive clusters of small white flowers, from which the seed of this grain substitute are gathered. Medicinally, buckwheat is used to treat blood circulation issues, menstrual problems, snake bites, and other traumatic injuries. Who needs western medicine when you've got buckwheat? Fagopyrum 'Flambeau' has been very well behaved in our garden, staying in a tight clump and producing no seedlings in 20 years.
