Triosteum aurantiacum 'Barry Purple' is a 2021 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of a fantastic Aaron Floden selection of the little-known US native clumping honeysuckle relative. Triosteum aurantiacum, which hails from mesic woodlands from Canada south to Georgia, is a deciduous perennial that emerges in spring with several nearly 3' tall, upright stalks, each clothed with opposite 8" long x 3.5" wide, fuzzy leaves. The bee-pollinated, cinnamon-colored flowers occur along the leaf axils in late spring, followed by showy, peanut-sized orange fruit, starting in mid-July (NC), hence the common name, orange fruit horse gentian. While the leaves are typically green, the foliage of Triosteum 'Barry Purple' emerges with a significant dark purple blush, that eventually ages to green. It's taken us a decade to build up enough stock to list, so when these are gone, don't expect a return engagement soon.
