Trillium oostingii is a recently named trillium that hails from just a few seasonally-flooded sites in Richland County, South Carolina. It was first discovered in 1937, but mistaken for Trillium viride until 2002, when botanist Dr. Chick Gaddy recognized it as something new and after DNA confirmation, named it after the original discoverer, H.J. Oosting. The 8" tall stems of the slowly offsetting Trillium oostingii are cinnamon red toward the bottom and green above and topped in early April (NC) with nicely glaucous green mottled leaves and chartreuse yellow petals that are burgundy toward the base...like what you would expect if you crossed Trillium lancifolium with Trillium recurvatum. We were pleased to offer nursery-propagated, seed-grown, flowering-sized plants of this rare gem for the first time in 2017.
