(aka: Echinopsis) Trichocereus 'Iridescent Watermelon' is a splendid hardy cactus hybrid, created by our volunteer succulent specialist Mike Papay, who crossed three Northern Argentine species, Trichocereus schickendantzii, Soehrensia bruchii, and Trichocereus thelogonus. The result is an amazing hybrid that has survived for six years of wet North Carolina winters, with a low of 7 degrees F so far. Our original specimen in our rock garden is now 18" tall and loaded with bundles of large iridescent red flowers, usually starting for us in mid to late April. Each seedling will be different, so we can't guarantee flower color or exact hardiness, but we can promise that each plant will put on an amazing show if kept very dry in the winter garden.
