If they begin to look tired during the growing season, don't hesitate to cut them to the ground. If it's not too late in the year, they will quickly resprout from the clusters of growth buds at the base. In fall, the old foliage of bleeding heart can be cut to the ground to make the plant look tidier.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003ch3\u003eGrowing Conditions:\u003c\/h3\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eAlthough most Dicentra eximia prefer light shade, our selection, 'Dolly Sods' prefers full sun, and does not like shade. This can be done most anytime, though it would be best, if possible, to avoid the time when the leaves are developing. Once fully matured, the leaves will not be affected by division. The subterranean rhizomes are finger thick and bright red inside. Divide into separate plants and replant about 6\" apart. Long rhizomes can be cut into shorter sections each several inches long. As rhizomes are underground stems, cutting them into shorter pieces produces the same results as pinching back an above ground stem:The dormant lateral buds will now grow with the removal of the terminal bud. Do not expect new growth from these rhizome cuttings until the following spring.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003ch3\u003eGrowing Conditions:\u003c\/h3\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eSanguinaria canadensis 'Multiplex' is a spring ephemeral, coming into growth and bloom early in the year when it can make use of the sunlight before the canopy trees leaf out. It will succeed in bright shade or part day sun areas. It can also be grown in sunny locations where it will grow more strongly. Avoid a poorly drained soil. Done after bloom the foliage will likely die away quicker than it would if left undivided. No worries here as it will definitely return next fall.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003ch3\u003eGrowing Conditions:\u003c\/h3\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eIpheion are summer dormant and will tolerate drought during its dormant period. They resume growth in the fall and grow through the winter months into spring. At this time they need moisture and at least part day sun. They will thrive in full sun. Avoid poorly drained soil. They don't need sharp drainage, just average drainage.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eAs Ipheion grows through the winter months it is an excellent plant to fill spaces that are vacated in the winter by large herbaceous perennials such as \u003ca title=\"See more crinums\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plantdelights.com\/collections\/crinum\"\u003ecrinums\u003c\/a\u003e and \u003ca title=\"See more hardy hibiscus\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plantdelights.com\/collections\/hibiscus-plant-rose-mallow\"\u003ehibiscus\u003c\/a\u003e or under deciduous shrubs. Thus two different plants occupy the same space, subletting it during opposite growing seasons; the frost-tolerant Ipheion during the winter growing season and the others during the frost-free growing season. Twice as much ornamental display is thus created in the same space by using this method.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eNatural Impact:\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eIpheion is of great value for the time of the year that it blooms, late winter into early spring, and for the length of time that it is in bloom, at least 6 weeks, producing a long succession of flowers. Blue is the typical color of both Ipheion uniflorum and Ipheion perigrinans and it is a true blue and perhaps of greater value for being this hue. The white and pink flowered selections are also very beautiful.
