(aka: Hexastylis arifolia) Asarum arifolium 'Silver Spreader' is a 2015 Plant Delights introduction that we originally discovered in a colony of stoloniferous wild gingers in 2006 in Clay County, Georgia. Virtually every North American native Asarum arifolium forms a tight clump, but this selection makes a stoloniferous spreading groundcover reminiscent of the European Asarum europaeum. In seven years, Asarum arifolium 'Silver Spreader' has formed a 6" tall x 2' wide dense patch of anise-scented, 3.5" arrowhead-shaped, silver leaves, each highlighted by a dark green border, a central green stripe, and random green blotches. Tucked just below the evergreen foliage in late winter/early spring are cute, hairy, beige-pink, jug-like flowers. We think this will be a revolutionary wild ginger for the woodland shade garden.
