Sarcococca 'Western Hills' is an introduction from California's legendary Western Hills nursery. Although it is usually listed as a form of Sarcococca hookeriana var. digyna, it's actually a hybrid with that species and turns out to be the first known red-fruited form of Sarcococca x confusa. Sarcococca 'Western Hills' forms a poets laurel-like, non-suckering evergreen clump to 2' tall x 3' wide. The upright stems are clothed with small, narrow green leaves, which are also home to terminal flower buds that appear in fall and open as tiny fragrant white flowers in late winter. Starting in early January (NC), the stems are further adorned with bright red fruit. Sarcococca 'Western Hills' is very tolerant of dry woodland soils, but is intolerant of soggy sites.
