From the Huntington Botanical Garden in California comes this nice, bushy salvia hybrid (S. farinacea x S. longispicata) that was selected by California horticulturist John MacGregor and introduced in 1979. S. 'Indigo Spires' has dark blue-purple flowers, borne on long arching stalks throughout summer and until frost. The unusual, twisting flower spikes create a form of their own in the garden. For increased hardiness, don't cut it down until spring!
