Orostachys iwarenge, from the Japanese mountain cliffs, is a cute little sedum cousin which forms an attractive evergreen groundcover when cultivated in the rock garden. The glaucous grey/brown, 2" wide, fleshy rosettes, which resemble sempervivums, spread by short stolons to form an 1" tall x 18" wide patch. In October, the rosettes are topped with 4" tall towers jammed with tiny creamy flowers. Each flowering rosette dies away but is unnoticed among the mass of smaller rosettes. Orostachys iwarenge is delightful in either a container or in the rock garden, as long as it isn't subjected to extended droughts.
