So, what is a raphiocarpus, you ask? Well, it's a little known member of the African violet (Gesneriad) family. This collection of Raphiocarpus petelotii comes from a 2008 Ozzie Johnson expedition to Northern Vietnam, where he found this growing at 4,800' elevation. For us, Raphiocarpus petelotii 'Finale' makes a small, 1' tall, clumping perennial, adorned with fuzzy green leaves, each highlighted by extensive black veining. In late October and November, the clumps are adorned with creamy white tubular flowers, streaked violet inside.
