We are pleased to introduce a fascinating selection of bear's breech that's been growing on the campus of South Carolina's Wofford College since the Civil War, when it was reportedly planted by the college's founder, Benjamin Wofford. A former PDN'er and Wofford descendant, Charlie Wofford, shared this plant with us. In our garden trials, Acanthus mollis 'Wofford Rhubarb' has formed a 2' tall x 3' wide clump of scalloped, glossy green leaves, supported by brilliant rhubarb-red stems...a trait rarely seen in the genus acanthus...truly exceptional. Thanks to living in South Carolina since the college was founded in 1854, it has developed excellent heat tolerance.
