Sarcococca hookeriana 'Purple Stem' is a wonderful Himalayan member of the boxwood family that makes a superb, texturally interesting evergreen groundcover for the woodland garden. The 18" long, upright stalks are adorned with narrow, glossy green leaves. The dusty purple stems spread slowly via underground stolons, forming a 4' wide patch in 10 years. In late winter/early spring, the deer-resistant plants are laden with small but very fragrant white flowers. While Sarcococca hookeriana var. humilis loves rich organic soils, ours have thrived in less than stellar soils in deep shade.
