(aka: Silene banksia) Lychnis 'Once in a Vermillion' is a 2021 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of our clonal selection of the Chinese native Lychnis senno, which resides in scattered localities from sea level to 6,000' elevation. In addition to being rare, Lychnis senno is an amazing garden specimen that is virtually unknown in Western gardens. Our plants are cutting propagated descendants from the best of several seedlings of the endangered Japanese strain. This denizen of grasslands and open forests forms basal rosettes of pubescent (hairy) green leaves. In spring 20" lax stalks elongate, each topped for us from July through September with clusters of deeply-incised flowers of vermillion orange. In addition to looking pretty awesome in the garden, Lychnis senno is used medicinally in Japan as a blood thinner. Light shade to part sun and average to dry soils seem best. Lychnis senno looks fairly non-descript until the flowers open, then better grab the sunglasses...wow!
