(aka: Hakonechloa 'HABsf1007') Hakonechloa 'SunFlare' is the newest selection of the deciduous Japanese forest grass, arriving from British Columbia, Canada, where it was discovered by nurseryman, Lyle Courtice as a dwarf, compact mutation of Hakonechloa 'All Gold'. We're not sure what else mutated, but it has been a shockingly good grower in our heat and humidity, where it forms an 18" tall x 2' wide clump of bright gold foliage that takes on significant red highlights as the plants age...especially when they receive some early morning sun. Rich moist soil gives the best results.

Maintenance:

Hakonechloa 'Sunflare' is a very low maintenance perennial. In spring, before the new foliage emerges, we like to trim back the old brown foliage, but that's about it.

If your clump gets large enough that you'd like to divide and spread it around, this is best done in fall and winter. Just keep in mind that this is a patented selection, so propagation is technically not legal. Whatever you do, do not ever divide it to sell.

Growing Conditions:

Hakonechloa 'Sunflare' is best in a rich soil, of average moisture, as long as the drainage is decent. It thrives in both clay and ammended sandy loam.

Sunflare hakone grass is a light shade plant that doesn't have much sun tolerance.

Garden Value:

The pendant form and airy texture of hakonechloe is prized by garden designers, since it works so well to complement bold textured plants as well as hardscapes.
