Clematis 'Stand by Me' is a unique new twist on clematis from Walters Gardens' plant breeder, Hans Hansen. Working with two non-vining species, the Eurasian Clematis integrifolia and the Midwest US Clematis fremontii, Hans was able to create a taller, more floriferous, and more vigorous bush clematis. When young, Clematis 'Stand by Me' stands erect, but as it matures, eventually to 3' tall, the weight of all the flowers needs some support, so we recommend planting it near a good support structure...either constructed or a receptive shrub. When mature, Clematis 'Stand by Me' is topped with hundreds of down-turned blue bell-shaped flowers in late spring, and sporadically in summer. The other superb summer feature is the airy seed heads which smother the plant. Like most perennials, Clematis 'Stand by Me' dies back to the ground in fall.
