This is always one of our favorite NC native penstemons. The bushy winter rosettes of green with reddish overtones gives rise to 12" tall stalks of whitish lavender bells in May and June...sure to be an eye catcher in the garden. P. smallii is short lived (2-3 years), but seeds around nicely...always in the perfect spot. P. smallii demands good drainage...even to the point of growing well in gravel.
