Penstemon 'Red Riding Hood' is a fantastic 2008 introduction from the breeding program of Holland's Remy Lubbe. This complex interspecific hybrid forms an upright 2' tall x 2' wide vigorous clump topped in spring with numerous upright stems, each laden with an abundance of cherry red bells. I often see this listed as a selection of the non-existent Penstemon schmidel even though anyone, including the US Patent Office, who took a few seconds to check would know that Kasimir Schmidel was actually the 18th century botanical physician who named the genus Penstemon...what a shame that no one seems to care about accuracy.
