In 2014, we first saw Phaenosperma globosum in the German shade garden of plantsman Georg Uebelhart and were smitten...and on a mission to first acquire one for our garden, then share it with the gardening world. Phaenosperma globosum is native from sea level to 6,000' elevation on moist mountain slopes from Northeast India and east to Japan and Korea. Phaenosperma globosum is a deciduous woodland ornamental grass that produces a 3' tall, upright clump of broad green foliage, topped starting in early July (NC) with terminal, wispy, beaded seedheads that are great for flower arranging. Waterfall millet is quite unique and easy to grow in morning sun to light shade.
