Gentiana villosa 'Thomasville' is our seed-grown offspring from a plant we found near Thomasville in Clarke County, Alabama. Native from Ohio south to Florida, Gentiana villosa makes a very small deciduous clump, with stems that reach only 8" tall, clothed with dark shiny leaves. Starting in mid-October, the easy-to-grow woodland native is topped with clusters of bottle-shape white flowers that open at the tip to reveal an intricate network of green veins. We have found Gentiana villosa quite easy to grow in average woodland soil...watch as the bumblebees come to dine. Not only is Gentiana villosa carried for good luck, but it's also been used to relieve back pain and treat snake bites, although we couldn't find any patients to confirm the efficacy of the latter.
