Sarracenia rubra ssp. gulfensis is a name coined by sarracenia expert Don Schnell for plants native to the Florida Panhandle counties of Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, and Walton. The dense clumps of narrow green pitchers are streaked with red toward the opening with a red flush around the hood. Sarracenia rubra ssp. gulfensis is one of the last pitcher plants to go dormant, often looking good well into fall. In early spring, the dormant clumps are topped with stalks of lightly fragrant, rosy red flowers. Sarracenia rubra ssp. gulfensis is classified as threatened in its native Florida, so thanks to Dr. Larry Mellichamp for sharing our original plant.
