(aka: Hexastylis lewisii) We are excited to once again offer this rarely offered Southeast US native wild ginger. Asarum lewisii is the kudzu of wild gingers, quite unlike other asarums in that the runners can reach 20' (not inches) long, with leaves occurring every 2-3 inches along the stem. Asarum lewisii is found naturally in moist seasonal floodplains of deciduous forests, growing in either leaf duff or sphagnum. The foliage on this Flossie Johnson selection (cuttings from Wake Co., NC) resembles Asarum virginicum with 2" wide glossy green silver-veined leaves. In a garden setting, you can expect a 3' wide patch in 5 years. Starting in mid-April (NC), you can enjoy the dark purple thimble-sized, very hairy flowers with lovely interior reticulate venation of purple against a creamy background...assuming you can still get down on the ground to see them.
