They bloom for about six months but are not self-cleaning and the spent flower stalks are retained until a tidy minded gardener comes along and trims them off. The peak time to do this is late winter. At this time the shrubs are cut back by a half to two thirds to remove the dead tops of the plant. This does not require precision. It is a method meant to allow quick clean up of these woody salvias. Of course, any totally dead stems should also be removed. The health of the plant will not be compromised if it is not cleaned up but one will be viewing the current year's flowers amongst last year's dead flower stalks. This is the only routine maintenance that these salvias need.

The selections of Salvia greggii, Salvia microphylla and Salvia x jamensis vary in their vigor. By late May, Ipheion 'Greystone' has gone dormant for the summer. We recommend dividing the clumps every 3-5 years and either sharing with your neighbors or starting a nursery...just kidding. This can be done most anytime though the best time might be after bloom. Dig a clump up and divide into as many clumps as desired, from one bulb to clumps of many bulbs. Replant and water in. Done after bloom the foliage will likely die away quicker than it would if left undivided. They resume growth in the fall and grow through the winter months into spring. At this time they need moisture and at least part day sun. They will thrive in full sun. Avoid poorly drained soil. They don't need sharp drainage, just average drainage.

As Ipheion grows through the winter months it is an excellent plant to fill spaces that are vacated in the winter by large herbaceous perennials such as crinums and hibiscus or under deciduous shrubs. In the garden, this new industry standard produces a juniper-textured shrub to 1' tall x 7' wide. In summer, the color is olive green, changing to a lovely bronze in winter. In our trials, it's been an exceptionally tough plant as long as the drainage is excellent and it's exposed to less than four hours of direct sun. This selection traces back to the late professor and plant explorer, Ed Corbett of the University of Connecticut.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1527/8799/files/Microbiota-decussata-Prides.i-18238.s-67766.r-1.jpg?v=1775218573
crocanthemum-carolinianum-goldtender
Crocanthemum carolinianum Goldtender

(aka: Helianthemum carolinianum) We are pleased to share our 2024 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of the little-known, floriferous native (East Texas to NC), Crocanthemum carolinianum 'Goldtender'. Our original 1998 seed collection from a mowed highway right-of-way in NC's Pender County, has been a star in our dry, full-sun gravel rock garden for the last few decades. For us, flowering begins in late March, and continues through most of the summer. The deciduous small patches of Carolina Rockrose produce two types of flowers, cleistogamous (which never open and are self-fertile) and chasmogamous flowers which are open. It loves to spread around via seed, if conditions are right. In the wild, the lack of wildfires have caused populations to greatly diminish, as plant competition shades it out. If you like golden yellow flowers and virtually unknown Southeast US natives, you're sure to love Carolina Rockrose.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1527/8799/files/Crocanthemum-carolinianum-Goldtender.i-18301.s-67743.r-1.jpg?v=1774559080
helianthus-mollis-tulsa-gold
Helianthus mollis Tulsa Gold

Helianthus mollis 'Tulsa Gold' is a 2025 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of a Todd Lasseigne selection of the US (Maine to Texas), prairie native.
