Iris brevicaulis 'Yucca Do Blue' is a wonderfully unique wild collection of the Southeast US native Iris brevicaulis, found by our friends at the former Yucca Do Nursery, in Austin County, Texas near the town of Bellville. Not only are the flowers a much darker blue/purple coloration than is typically seen in this species, but this collection is from three counties further west than Iris brevicaulis is usually documented as occurring. Iris brevicaulis 'Yucca Do Blue' forms a 2' tall x 6' wide patch of wide green, upright, arching leaves, and in early May (NC), is adorned with masses of dark blue/purple flowers that arch outward around the base of the clump. Iris brevicaulis can be grown as a marginal aquatic or in a garden where the soil moisture is reasonably consistent. Some degree of summer dormancy is typical for all Louisiana type iris, with regrowth beginning in fall.
