(aka: Petalostemon purpureum) Dalea, not to be confused with Dahlia, is a little-known North American (most of the Central US) prairie native baptisia relative. The wiry 2' tall stalks, held at a 45 degree angle, are clothed with lacy fern-like green foliage and topped from late spring through early summer with fascinating butterfly-attracting purple flowers that resemble 2" long green pickles, each wearing a purple tutu. Dalea purpurea is an excellent, well-behaved, sun-loving, and amazingly drought tolerant perennial, so it's a great choice for the rock garden.
