Dalea bicolor var. argyraea is a superb silver foliage form of the typically green-leafed, shrubby Southwest US native. In the wild, this silver foliage form of prairie clover is limited to alkaline sandy uplands in Texas and New Mexico, but we have found it incredibly well-adapted to Eastern US rains and humidity. If you give silver prairie clover a well-drained, bright sunny site, it will reward you with an airy, textural contrast to the bolder textures of agaves and cactus. The tardily-deciduous woody clumps are adorned, starting for us in late September and continuing into November with small terminal clusters of lavender flowers. The flowers are great for attracting an array of bees and butterflies, and the foliage is a host for both dogface and sulfur butterflies. We can't say enough great things about this overlooked North American native.
