(aka: Eryngium aquaticum var. ravenelii) Eryngium ravenelii is one of those wonderful southeast natives that you wonder why everyone doesn't grow. Shared by plant prodigy Dr. Patrick McMillan, Eryngium ravenelii forms a small basal rosette of 1' long linear leaves, which, starting for us in mid-August, is topped with 30" tall flowering stalks, each ending in branched antennae-like clusters of 6-10 blue fuzzy, thumb-sized ball flower heads...a superb pollinator plant. Eryngium ravenelii is critically imperiled in its native wetland alkaline habitat from South Carolina to northern Florida. Our offering is propagated from a Charleston County, South Carolina collection. In the garden, Eryngium ravenelii is easy to grow in moist to average moisture soils, that are near slightly acidic to slightly alkaline.
