From Minnesota south to Alabama, botanists out for early spring walks can find this gem in moist, rich, low woodlands, often growing in alkaline soils. In the garden, Isopyrum biternatum is an easy-to-grow, superb spring ephemeral wildflower. For us, false rue anemone emerges in January and is in flower by early February, despite temperatures that are still extremely cold. For months, the dainty-looking, pure white bells top the short, 8" tall clumps of airy green foliage. By June, Isopyrum biternatum is resting for the summer...just like some former workers I've known.
