We are pleased to introduce one of the rarest southeast native plants, the Federally Endangered Harperocallis flava. Harperocallis flava, a member of the Tofieldiaceae family, only occurs in a few populations in the Apalachicola region of the Florida Panhandle, where it is becoming scarcer, primarily due to fire suppression. Our offering is propagated from leftover research plants provided by the USFWS to the SC Botanical Gardens. We find Harperocallis flava quite easy to grow with sarracenias in an acidic sand/peat bog garden. Harper's Beauty forms tight 5" tall tufts of narrow, upright, grass-like foliage, topped in April and May with 18" tall stalks, ending in small, bright yellow, 6-petalled, star-shaped flowers. We are unable to ship these outside of North Carolina due to regulations designed to keep endangered plants rare and out of the hands of gardeners.
