Dicentra 'Dolly Sods' is a 2004 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction. Through the decades, we have made several wild collections of the US native (Michigan south to Georgia) Dicentra eximia, but none have performed as well in our hot climate as this seed strain from near the famous Dolly Sods Wilderness Area in West Virginia's Tucker County. Expect a clump 18" tall x 3' wide in 5 years. The lacy, dissected, blue-green foliage is topped all spring and summer with light pink flowers held just above the foliage. As strange as this may sound, we are growing Dicentra eximia 'Dolly Sods' in a sunny berm with cacti and agaves...truly outstanding!

Maintenance:

Dicentra eximia requires little if any maintenance in the garden. If they begin to look tired during the growing season, don't hesitate to cut them to the ground. If it's not too late in the year, they will quickly resprout from the clusters of growth buds at the base. In fall, the old foliage of bleeding heart can be cut to the ground to make the plant look tidier.

Growing Conditions:

Although most Dicentra eximia prefer light shade, our selection, 'Dolly Sods' prefers full sun, and does not like shade. Anywhere from 2-8 hours of sun daily is fine. Despite its appearance, 'Dolly Sods' is also quite drought tolerant, although it tolerates regular irrigation as well.

Natural Impact:

Dicentra eximia is a favorite of bees, so when the plants are in flower in spring and summer, you'll have some happy bumblebees in the garden.
