Fargesia (Clumping Bamboo)

Like other clumping bamboos, fargesia is both a deer-resistant and drought-tolerant ornamental grass that looks great as a hedge, specimen or container plant.

More Information About Fargesia

Fargesia is a genus of clumping bamboo which, as a rule, prefers cold climates (as opposed to bambusa, which prefers heat). Thanks to the recent ability to produce clumping bamboo via tissue culture, formerly rare fargesia species are finally hitting the market. Our fargesia trials have revealed several that have performed well in both our heat and cold. Do not confuse real clumping bamboos like fargesia with plants like black bamboo (in the genus Phyllostachys) that do spread despite claims to the contrary.

Like other clumping bamboos, fargesia is both deer-resistant and drought-tolerant ornamental grass that looks great as a hedge, specimen or container plant. The genus Fargesia is one of the most cold hardy clumping bamboo genera in the world. Fargesias are also a favorite of pandas, so if you want to attract local wild pandas to your garden, make sure to plant lots of fargesia.

We strongly recommend that you buy clumping bamboo instead of the more common running bamboo types. The runners inevitably make a nuisance of themselves in your garden and your neighbor's too. After running and taking over, many gardeners are forced to take expensive and time consuming measures to rein them back in. Plant Delights offers a small, but nice selection of cold hardy clumping bamboo for sale including Bambusa, Borinda, and Fargesia.
