By all rights, this rare Southeast US native Echeandia texensis shouldn't be winter-hardy for us, but here is a great lesson why we trial plants. This stunning fall bloomer hails from the summit of Loma del Potrero Cercado, east of Brownsville, Texas (Zone 9A) at the whopping elevation of 26' . Despite this upbringing, it has taken all the winter cold we can throw at it without blinking. The deciduous 3' wide spider plant-like green rosette returns in spring, and in September and October is topped with 5' tall branched spikes of small star-like, mustard-yellow flowers...superb for color in the fall garden!
