This amazing Gladiolus dalenii hybrid was introduced to the market by the former Holbrook Nursery in NC after it was discovered in the frigid mountain town of Boone, NC, by extension agent Jeff Owen. The 4' tall stalks open in early June (NC) with medium-sized flowers of peachy-apricot, highlighted by a yellow center and red streaked throat...attractive to hummingbirds. Although we list this as Zone 6, we have heard many reports of Zone 5 hardiness. Gladiolus 'Boone' multiplies obscenely fast, so you'll have plenty to share.

Gladiolus dalenii is quite winter hardy so it can be left in the ground without protection where it is winter hardy. Gladiolus are extremely easy to overwinter where they are not winter-hardy. Dig the bulbs (corms), remove soil, and store dry in a frost free location. Do not store in a closed plastic bag. Save all of the cormels (the tiny new "bulbs") for replanting. Gladiolus will multiply to the point where they will become crowded and push up out of the ground where they are hardy, and left in the ground. Dig, divide and replant at this point. A perhaps more natural appearance occurs after a number of years of increase when flower spikes are produced in a range of sizes. The Gladiolus dalenii are quite fertile. Cut flower stalks off once they are done blooming so as to prevent seeding. The only other yearly maintenance consists of cutting the foliage to the ground after frost, or earlier if it matures before then. All gladiolus are great cut-flowers.
