Crinum 'African Queen' was originally imported from Africa in 2000, without a name, by Florida plantsman, Nestor White. Crinum 'African Queen' forms a 1' tall compact, slowly-offsetting, octopus-shaped rosette of deeply ruffled glossy green foliage topped, starting for us in early September (NC) with sturdy 3' stalks of 14-16 red-striped buds each, opening to pure white, pendant, tubular flowers. In warmer climates, flowering can start as early as late summer. Nestor thinks that it may be a fertile Crinum stulhmanii x Crinum macowanii hybrid.
