(aka: Didiclis uncinata) Peacock spikemoss (a prehistoric fern relative) is one of our favorite groundcovers for the woodland garden...we actually say that to all the selaginellas. Peacock spikemoss fern hails from Central China south into Vietnam. The low, spreading habit of Selaginella uncinata and the semi-evergreen metallic aquamarine foliage, overlaid on a green background, are sure to make visitors stop to admire this gem. The foliage color is best after the new fluorescent blue growth emerges in late spring. We have been thrilled with the performance of peacock moss in winter hardiness trials in western Michigan, where many years of temperatures to -15F have proven no problem.

Maintenance:

Selaginella uncinata is an evergreen maintenance free perennial groundcover. About the only thing we ever do is trim the winter tattered foliage to the ground before the new growth begins in spring.

Peacock spikemoss fern roots down as it grows, so is easy to transplant to new locations. This can be done anytime the ground isn't frozen.

Growing Conditions:

Peacock moss grows well in both light open shade and part day full sun as long as the ground is reasonably moist.

Garden Value:

The foliage color of peacock spikemoss fern makes an amazing foil for a number of other plants, while keeping weeds at bay.
