Iris x ampliflora 'Ming Treasure' is one of the most incredible new iris discoveries in recent memory, and we are thrilled to be able to share. This is a naturally occurring sterile hybrid of Iris tectorum and either Iris japonica (7b/8a), Iris wattii (8b), or Iris confusa (8b)...not I. wattii x I. japonica as published. It was discovered in 2013 at 2,500' elevation in Chongqing City, China (formerly part of Sichuan province) by Dr. Xiao of the Shanghai Botanic Garden. Iris x ampliflora 'Ming Treasure' forms a giant 3' tall x 6' wide evergreen clump of basal fans of arching green 4" wide leaves. The slowly rhizomatous clumps are topped, starting in late March/early April (NC) and continuing for 4-6 weeks, with 5' tall, branched stalks of 20-30 large 5" wide lavender blue flowers. Although it has some sun tolerance, it performs far better in light shade. Thanks to plantsmen Jim Waddick and Scott McMahan for facilitating the introduction. Voluntary royalties from each plant sold will go to support Dr. Xiao's iris research. The first plant released in fall 2021 sold for $575.
