Gentiana saponaria 'Rockford' is a 2016 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of a special strain of the easy-to-grow, deciduous, North American (Illinois through Louisiana) native, fall-flowering perennial. In the wild, soapwort gentian is often found in low, damp areas, but in the garden, it's thrived in typical soil in open woodland conditions. Gentiana saponaria 'Rockford' was discovered by our own Zac Hill, who found this exceptionally vigorous population near Rockford, Alabama. Not only is the vigor exceptional, but it's the latest-flowering form we've seen, producing abundant terminal clusters of blue bottle-like flowers starting in early November. Despite the late flowering period, the flowers of Gentiana saponaria 'Rockford' seem immune to freezes...quite amazing.
