While the dwarf Japanese native Selaginella tamariscina is insanely popular in Japan, it's strangely absent in American commerce. I say strangely, but considering its growth rate is akin to watching stainless steel rust, no one could make money selling it. Fortunately, we are crazy enough to offer the first of several clones we have in production. Selaginella tamariscina 'Beni Kujaku' makes a small, evergreen, trunking clump to 4" tall x 8" wide that takes on a red cast in cool weather...sooo cute! In the wild, Selaginella tamariscina grows on lightly shaded rocks from Hokkaido in the cold north of Japan, south through Indonesia and west to northern India. The problem is the Japanese haven't maintained provenance, so we don't know which clones are incredibly winter hardy and which aren't. Selaginella tamariscina 'Beni Kujaku' has been fine in our woodland shade garden since 2008, but the key is to keep it dry in winter.
