In 2000, we first saw the Texas native spikemoss in the arid Texas Hill Country's Burnet County and returned home with a couple of cuttings. Years later, in our full sun rock garden, Selaginella peruviana 'Burnet' has formed a lovely 1" tall x 2' wide evergreen patch resembling a pile of closely-mown green pipe cleaners. Although quite heat- and drought-tolerant, Selaginella peruviana survives drought, like the resurrection fern, by curling up and turning brown, only to re-hydrate when rain or irrigation arrives. We find it strange that very few gardeners grow our great native selaginellas so we're out to change that...perhaps a better description would help.
