(syn: Dysosma versipellis) Podophyllum versipelle ssp. boreale is one of the most vigorous and easiest to grow of the wonderful Chinese mayapples...a mayapple that we predict will soon be elevated to species status as Podophyllum boreale. Podophyllum versipelle ssp. boreale has only one (sometimes two) 18" wide, hexagonally-shaped, deeply-lobed, glossy green tropical-looking leaf perched atop a solitary 3' fleshy green stem. Unlike our native Podophyllum peltatum, Podophyllum versipelle ssp. boreale is a clumping species that remains up until a hard frost. As Podophyllum versipelle ssp. boreale matures, clusters of fascinating liver-red, stringy-petaled flowers appear just under the leaf in spring, followed by bright red jujube-like fruit in fall...guaranteed to freak out your neighbors! Moist, humus-rich soil grows the largest plants.
