Aristolochia fimbriata is a really cool deciduous groundcover Dutchman's pipe that spreads out to 2'. The prostrate little green stems are clothed with medium green rounded leaves, each highlighted with dramatic silver veining. The cute, little, 1" long, yellow and brown flowers resemble miniature elephant trunks and are produced along the stem all summer. In winter, the stems retreat back to the base so there are no invasive problems with this gem! The only "ornamental" downside is that aristolochia is a delicacy for pipevine swallowtail butterfly larvae in midsummer...less foliage, but more butterflies!

I like this plant but it does spread around somehow. It has hopped from one bed surrounded by a cement patio into other beds. It's not quite as bad as some plants I've loved and am now trying to weed out (hellebores anyone?) but it does spread.

This is a nice little plant and I do get pipevine swallowtail cats on it each year. However, I do think it has invasive potential even if it dies back to he ground each year because it sets viable seed. I planted it in one spot next to my back door. It has since jumped the concrete path, it's all over my vegetable garden and is now in two more garden beds throughout my yard.

This small Dutchman's Pipe ground cover appeared in my shade garden in Cary a few years ago. It makes slow progress each year as I crawl around looking for the funny looking flowers. It has a unique fragrance and the leaves are beautiful as they blend in with other shade plants. I don't know how it arrived, but I love it.
