Agave wocomahi is so difficult to find that it's almost never mentioned in articles about winter hardy century plants. It was our Volunteer Agave Curator, Mike Papay, who first shared plants with us after it survived cold single digit F winters in his nearby garden. This seed strain of Agave wocomahi hails from the Basaseachic region in the Mexican State of Chihuahua...one of the coldest spots in Mexico. Here, Agave wocomahi can be found growing from cracks in the alkaline, rock-based, pine-oak forests at 4,000'-8,000' elevation. Closely related to the less hardy Agave bovicornuta, Agave wocomahi forms a rarely offsetting 3' tall x 5' wide, architecturally symmetrical rosette of very dark green leaves with lovely bud imprint patterns, and despite being a "crack" lover, it still has great bright cinnamon red teeth. When mature, Agave wocomahi will be topped with 12' tall spikes of paniculate yellow flowers...a pollinators dream. If you like to indulge with some "nectar" after a hard days gardening, Agave wocomahi is one of the top century plant species for making good quality mescal (redneck tequila), due to its high sugar content. As with all hardy century plants, keeping the plants dry in winter is the key to success. Our supply of these is very limited.
