More Information About Verbena

Verbena is a genus of hardy perennial plants that have come a long way from their conventional garden use as summer annuals! These butterfly magnets give new meaning to the term 'summer color', since most verbena selections bloom for months. Verbena plants like full sun and tolerate drought well, but revel with moderate irrigation. The better you treat your verbena, the faster it spreads and flowers. Not only is verbena great in the ground, but it also also a stunning container plant or tender perennial in northerly zones. While true Verbena canadensis flowers prolifically only in spring and fall, the modern verbena hybrids make a stunning show all summer long in the perennial garden. Butterflies and hummingbirds love the flowers too.

For best hardiness, don't plant verbena after mid-September from Zone 8 north. Also, established clumps of verbena should be cut back to basal (on the ground) foliage in early to mid-September. This will promote good rooting of new stems in the ground, which improves winter survival. When you're ready to buy verbena for your perennial garden, check out our online list of verbena for sale.
