More Information About Sorghastrum
Sorghastrum is a small genus of tall ornamental grass plants from Africa and the Americas whose species are known as Indiangrass. One species, Sorghastrum nutans is a North American prairie species that is a very attractive native ornamental grass with its bluish foliage and golden seed heads that are especially pretty in fall.
Sorghastrum species tend to be deep rooted which means that they are quite drought tolerant, and can prevent erosion. Sorghastrum can tolerate a variety of soil types, including poor soils, dry soils, infertile soils and even heavy clay. In fact, in rich soils, sorghastrum tends to grow too tall and flop over. Maintaining Sorghastrum is easy...just cut it back to the ground in early spring before the new growth emerges. Sorghastrum is a great perennial ornamental grass for a meadow or hillside garden or as a vertical accent in a border.
Here's a little trivia for your next dinner party...the name sorghastrum literally means "inferior or incomplete resemblance to Sorghum". When you are ready to buy sorghastrum for your garden, check out our online offering of sorghastrum for sale.
